IATDMCT 2014 Travelling Lectureship: Professor Michael Neely visits members in India, Colombia and Brazil
IATDMCT is committed to fostering education in the fields of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology and amongst the core initiatives are the international lectureship. The first successful lectureship took place in 2010 and was led by Professor Vanessa Steenkamp, who gave lectures in Santiago, Antofagasta, and Chillan, in Chile.
During 2014, Professor Michael Neely, director of the Laboratory of the Applied Pharmacokinetics and Bioinformatics (LAPKB) of the University of Southern California, was supported by the IATDMCT to undertake the lectureship in Vellore, India (together with Dr. Jean Baptiste Woillard), Medellin Colombia and Novo Hamburgo, Brazil. During his visits, Pr. Neely hosted a series of workshops on pharmacometrics and its application to patient care, adapting to the needs of each group (in different clinical scenarios, whether more focused on research or clinical applications). Participants learned about core pharmacometric principles, and were instructed to use Pmetrics, a freely available population modelling and simulation software package for R, and/or BestDose, a software for optimizing dosing using non-parametric, multiple-model Bayesian adaptive control. Both softwares are initiatives of LAPKB who have been leaders in the field for several decades. The lectures were successful with high attendance and participation.
You can read the accounts by Dr. Denny Fleming (Vellore), Dr. Andres Zuluaga (Medellín) and Dr. Rafael Linden (Novo Hamburgo), as well as Dr. Neely’s experience, in the March 2015 Compass (Members Only).
